Striker Les suffered a knee injury in a challenge with Aston Villa’s Alan Wright after just 12 minutes of our Premiership opener.
He had hoped to be ready for our last fixture against Blackburn Rovers only for the knee to stiffen up after travelling to Lancashire.
But he has trained regularly since and is ready for the Saints. “The knee is okay,” he revealed. “I’ve trained for the last four days now and it’s stood up well. Hopefully I’ll be in the frame for Sunday.
“The injury was a real disappointment — after seven weeks of pre-season training, hard work, I felt in good shape, it was the first game and after 12 minutes I got a whack on the knee and I’m on the sidelines again.
“That’s football though. I hindsight I looked at the tackle and thought ‘did I need to go in for that?’ but if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be playing my game and only fooling myself.
“As long as I commit myself to things like that there will always be a possibility that I might get injured.”
Les Ferdinand has declared himself fit for Sunday’s visit of Southampton — reiterating that he will not change his game for fear of injury.
