Already guaranteed a top four spot, the team need one point to secure top three beyond all doubt (Manchester City can only go level on points with us) and we currently sit in second, three points ahead of Arsenal in third with a +14 goal difference.
Third place would represent our best-ever finish since the dawn of the Premier League in 1992-93, and best finish since 1989-90 and we last finished second back in 1962-63.
“This is only the beginning for this group of players,” said Eric, who has started 35 of our 36 matches in the Premier League. “It’s the first season we’ve all been together and to see what we’ve done is fantastic.
“But there is a lot more to come from this team. It’s a young squad and we will learn from a lot of experiences this season. That’s what we have to do, learn from this season, take those lessons into next season and try to do better. I think we will definitely improve next season.”
Naturally devastated after any lingering hopes of the title faded at Chelsea on Monday – ‘it only hits you when it’s really gone’ – Eric and the players are determined to put on a performance in our final home game of the season against Southampton on Sunday (1.30pm).
“Southampton are a very good team in good form and they proved that last week against Manchester City (a 4-2 win),” added Eric. “It will be a tough match but we’re confident and we want to give the fans something to cheer about in the last home match of the season.
“We want to go out on a high. That would be the ideal finish at home for us and for the fans.”
