'We know what we have to do' - Mauricio previews Sunderland

Mauricio Pochettino expects a meeting of two teams with a point to prove tomorrow – of course, he’s only concerned with one of them.

Unbeaten in the Premier League, we’re nevertheless looking to bounce back from defeat in our Champions League opener against Monaco on Wednesday night.

Sunderland, meanwhile, suffered a 3-0 home loss at the hands of Everton on Monday night.

“Both teams need a reaction and we need to show more of our qualities,” said Mauricio. “I’m focused on our team and we need to show more.

"We expect a very tough game because the Premier League always demands a lot and it’s difficult to know exactly what shape they will play, maybe they will change players from their last game against Everton.

“The most important thing is how we take the game and we need to be energetic, aggressive and play in the way we know how to play.

"We have to do what we know we have to do."

Mauricio’s views on Monaco - especially our first half display - are well documented, but here’s what he had to say when asked how everyone was feeling on Friday…

“We all feel a little better but still disappointed. I’ve watched the game again and I think I was right, I confirmed all my words. It was tough, but it was reality and sometimes when you are not good enough, you need to know the reality and not cheat yourself, to be brave.

“We know the first half was bad and we need to show more aggression with and without the ball, more desire, more passion.

“The second half was much better and in the end, we deserved more. We were better than Monaco but when you don’t play in the way you normally play, sometimes you pay for it.”
