Spurs v Saints - Mauricio's preview

Posted on 7 May 2016  - 16:00

A desire to win our final home match of the season and finish second for the fans has been the theme at Hotspur Way this week – led by Mauricio Pochettino.

“The energy we have created together has been fantastic,” said Mauricio ahead of a key Premier League encounter against Southampton at the Lane (1.30pm). “And it’s always important to finish the season at home with a victory.”

Already guaranteed a place in the top four, we go into this penultimate game knowing Manchester City can only match our current 70-point total and that victory over Southampton would put us in the driving seat for second place as we sit three points ahead of Arsenal with two games remaining and a plus-14 goal difference. City host Arsenal in Sunday’s later game at 4pm.

How have the players been this week after what happened at Chelsea?
Mauricio:
“The players are okay now. We felt disappointed after Monday but we need to be positive. We showed big character. It’s a game where we will learn a lot. We feel very proud of our players, the supporters feel that way too. We fought hard, we’re out of the race for the title but this season has been fantastic. We’re now sure of a place in the top four and that was our challenge from the beginning of the season. There are lots of positives and things to learn from and improve on for next season.”

How important is it to finish the season well now?
Mauricio: “It’s good for our players to try to give the supporters a victory. We feel grateful for their support all season, how they’ve helped us, pushed us and supported us. This has been fantastic, the energy we have created all together, and we need to keep that. It’s important to capitalise on this for the next seasons.”

How are the players mentally?
Mauricio: “They are strong. We learned a lot from this (Chelsea) game. Of course, when you lose big things you always feel sad, disappointed, but sometimes in football you need to feel that and remember it and try to work hard so you don’t feel it again.”

What is your message to the fans?
Mauricio: "I say thank-you very much for the whole season, for the way that you back the team and lift us in difficult moments. All together we have created a very good energy. We feel proud of you and you feel proud of your team. This is the most important thing to achieve big things in the future and that’s what we all want for this club."
