The Argentine international crossed paths with La Viola on several occasions during his two-year stint with Serie A rivals Roma prior to his arrival at Spurs in 2013.
That spell included a 1-0 triumph in Florence in the league, plus a 3-0 home victory in the Coppa Italia in which he scored two of his side’s goals.
The attacking midfielder also featured for us when we met tonight’s opponents in the Europa League a year ago but, as we prepare for the first leg of our round of 32 meeting this time around, he’s keen for us to prolong our recent run of good form in a bid to make further progress on the continent.
“We beat Fiorentina when I was at Roma, I remember that, but it’s another competition now and another team,” said Erik, who scored a hat-trick in our last Europa League game against Monaco in December.
“We are Tottenham and we are a very good team so we need to play in the same way that we have been playing recently and I think we can beat them.
“It will be a difficult game, we know that from last season when we played against them, but we are playing very good football at the moment so we need to keep going like this. We need to do our best to continue playing like a team.
“Of course, we have to win because we want to keep going in the Europa League. It’s important for us to continue in this competition.”
