Fiorentina v Spurs - form, facts and stats...

Posted on 18 February 2016  - 08:00

As we prepare to face Fiorentina for the second-successive time in the Europa League Round of 32, we take a look at some facts, form and stats from the Serie A giants.

Fiorentina players celebrate Khouma Babacar's winner against Inter on SundayMauro Zarate celebrates a goal against Carpi in February

History - Fiorentina were formed in 1926 and nicknamed 'La Viola' after their famous purple shirts.

Honours - Fiorentina's only European success came in our double campaign of 1960-61 when they lifted the UEFA European Cup Winners Cup. They have two Serie A titles and six Coppa Italia wins.

Current form - Sunday's 2-1 win against Inter stretched Fiorentina's unbeaten run to five in Serie A and they sit third in the table. However, they've lost four of 11 since their last European outing in December - including a surprise Coppa Italia exit at home to lowly Carpi. By contrast, we've lost two of 14 in all competitions since beating Monaco in our last European outing in December and we're on a run of seven straight wins in all competitions.

Last time out - Fiorentina came from 1-0 down to beat Inter 2-1 on Sunday thanks to a flying header from Borja Valero and a last-minute winner from Khouma Babacar.

Route to R32 - Fiorentina finished second behind FC Basel in Group I. They needed to beat Os Belenenses in their final group match to ensure qualification and did so 1-0.

Top scorer - Slovenian striker Josep Ilicic is Fiorentina's leading marksman this term with 10 in Serie A and two in the Europa League. Croatian Nikola Kalinic also has 10 in Serie A.

Familiar faces - Marcos Alonso (Bolton, Sunderland), Nikola Kalinic (Blackburn), Borja Valero (West Brom) and Mauro Zarate (West Ham, Birmingham, QPR) have all played in England.

We've met before - You only have to go back 12 months for our last meeting with Fiorentina, at the same R32 stage of the Europa League. The first leg ended 1-1 at the Lane before La Viola beat us 2-0 in the return at Stadio Artemio Franchi. We've also met in two pre-season friendlies at the Lane - the first was Bill Nicholson's testimonial in 2001, a 3-0 win and then a 3-2 success in 2010.

So close - Having beaten us in the Round of 32, Fiorentina went on to reach the semi-finals of last season's Europa League where they lost to eventual winners Sevilla.

Familiar foe for Erik - Erik Lamela is the only player in our squad with experience of Serie A having played for Roma between 2011-13.

The coach - Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa was a fine midfielder in his playing days and the Portuguese international lifted the European Cup with Juventus (1996) and Borussia Dortmund (1997). Formerly in charge of QPR, Swansea and Leicester, he's chasing a third-successive title as a coach having landed top honours with Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel in 2014 and the Swiss title with Basel last season.
