Wanyama's welcome return, Eriksen and Son hail 'exceptional' Dembele

Sun 16 April 2017, 09:52|Tottenham Hotspur

Victor Wanyama spoke of his delight at getting back into action while midfield colleague Mousa Dembele came in for praise as a handful of the players gave us their reactions to Saturday’s victory over Bournemouth.

For the second weekend in a row, we secured a 4-0 win at White Hart Lane, with Mousa getting us off the mark with his first goal of the season in the first period – a strike quickly followed up by Heung-Min Son with his fifth goal in four games.

Front men Harry Kane and Vincent Janssen completed the scoring in the second half.

After being forced off at Burnley a fortnight ago with a back problem, Kenyan international Victor was pleased to get some minutes under his belt, having replaced Harry in the latter stages, while several of the lads commented on Mousa’s contributions, not only in front of goal but all over the pitch.

Here’s what the lads said to us…

Victor Wanyama

On returning from injury
“It feels good, getting back to the pitch again. It’s not easy, you need to work hard. I’ve been working out so we’ll see. Today I think it was a good time for me to get onto the pitch and get back playing again. It was very good for me and I’m happy because we won so it was a really good day overall.”

On Eric Dier’s performances in midfield in his absence
“I think he did well, the team did well and we are having a good run. The team has done well for the last three games so hopefully we can continue this way. We are very strong and we can beat anyone at home.”

On Mousa’s goal
“That’s great for Mousa! I didn’t seem that coming but you know, when Mousa gets the ball I’m happy. He did great today – I think he was one of the best out there. He had a good shot saved early on so after that I’m glad he got his goal.”

Christian Eriksen

On another 4-0 win
“It shows our capability here at White Hart lane at the moment. We’re very confident when we’re playing, creating a lot of chances and even today it could have been more than 4-0 so it was a very nice game and hopefully it’s something we’ll keep doing.”

On the players’ mental approach as each win goes by
“I think we started stronger today than we did against Watford. In the first 15 minutes (last week) we were looking and searching for what the best solution was but we showed today straight from kick-off what we wanted to do. Of course, when you score a goal early on in the game it gives you a bit of extra confidence and it’s been like that the last few games – after we score the first goal we just keep going and that gives us an extra boost really.”

On Mousa’s opener
“He doesn’t score that many goals so we’re all happy with how we played today and happy for him to score as well. He showed his ability on the ball today, he’s an exceptional player. He finished it off nicely!”

On Sonny’s fine goalscoring form
“He has some periods where he’s flying and it always makes a big difference. It was the same in September where he had a few games where he was flying and hopefully he’ll continue doing that. Hopefully he’ll continue his form and help the team in the last six or seven games.”

Heung-Min Son

On the overall performance
“It’s great to win. My team-mates are doing very well, we wanted to win again and from the first minute it was already there to see – we were very aggressive and we played very well. We’re really happy to win 4-0 again but we just have to keep it going.”

Are you in the best form of your life?
“I don’t know. I just want to keep my form – it’s very good, my team-mates are helping me a lot and that’s why I’m really happy to play. I want to try my best on the pitch to help my team-mates. I feel fit, I feel really, really good and hopefully I can keep going until the end of the season.”

On Mousa’s goalscoring performance
“Mousa is a really, really good player. Sometimes I just enjoy watching him play football because he’s such a great player and I’m really happy for him to score his first goal of the season. Everyone is happy because he scored his first one today.”

Harry Kane

On the outcome
“It’s fantastic. We said before the game that we wanted to keep our momentum going and not give anything away. Bournemouth are a tough side, they press high but we did better than them, worked harder and played between the lines, got our chances and took them. It was a fantastic result.”

On the importance of the first goal
“That’s the same with any team, not just us. We get that breakthrough and you can go on to kill the game and we’ve been very good at that this season, especially at home. We got the first goal, the second and then the third just after half-time and that killed the game off. It’s important to do that because any team in the Premier League can come back and bite you. It’s important that didn’t happen.”

Mousa Dembele

Thoughts on the game
“I’m very happy with the performance and overall as a team we played very well from the start. We played with a lot of aggression and everyone really wanted to win the game, you could see that straight away. We had a lot of chances, we could have scored four goals even in the first half but overall we’re all very happy.”

Happy with your goal?
“You are always happy when you score. It was my first goal of the season so I’m very happy but the most important thing is that we won and everyone is very happy with that.”
