Toby's praise for Dele after Stoke success

Toby Alderweireld saw Dele Alli's first goal as the tipping point in Monday night's big win at Stoke.

England international Dele clipped the ball over Potters goalkeeper Shay Given midway through the second half to finally make it 2-0 after a handful of other openings slipped away following Harry Kane's early breakthrough.

From there, we continued going up through the gears as Harry and Dele grabbed their respective second goals to complete a 4-0 victory, with centre-half Toby underlining how that first strike from the latter gave the players a bit of breathing space.

“It was a great feeling because we were 1-0 up and missing chances so it was very important to get that second goal and get the morale back up," said the Belgian international.

"It was very important because you never know – if you’re 1-0 up and they start putting the ball in the box, they might bring Peter Crouch on and it could be difficult.

"You knew in your head how important it was to get that second goal and I wanted to scream and celebrate with the fans for a few moments before focusing again!”

The points collected at the Britannia Stadium closed the gap on leaders Leicester City to five points and also strengthened our standing in the upper echelons of the Premier League table.

That certainly wasn't lost on Toby afterwards, who hailed "a very good performance" on a ground at which we lost 3-0 last term.

“It’s nice to get two points back on Leicester and it’s also important for us to keep the other rival teams away and stay in that top three – that’s a big goal for us," he said.

"This is a very difficult place to come and I think we showed a lot of quality and character. The spirit was unbelievable and that takes us places. Of course you feel the pressure – Leicester dropped some points, City won at the weekend – so, yes, it’s a very important win and a great feeling."
