'Perfect game' for Toby and Jan after Cyprus, Eriksen and Kane react

Sun 01 October 2017, 11:23|Tottenham Hotspur

Defensive lynchpins Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen spoke of their pride at the way the team performed at Huddersfield, less than four days after a gruelling Champions League victory over APOEL in Cyprus.

Two goals from Harry Kane, one from Ben Davies and a stoppage-time fourth from Moussa Sissoko gave us a convincing 4-0 win at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.

Mauricio Pochettino made a few changes from the team that won 3-0 in Nicosia on Tuesday, but the level of performance remained fantastic and that wasn't lost on Toby and Jan, who joined Christian Eriksen and two-goal Harry to give us their views on our latest triumph...

Toby Alderweireld

Thoughts on the performance
"We started well, especially after a Champions League night – that’s always difficult and the key was to start well. We did that, finished our chances and very quickly went 3-0 up."

On getting that big lead in the first half
"It makes a lot of difference to score early like that, especially in away games in the Premier League, which are always tough. We did well today. It’s something to be proud of but we have to keep working hard and try to extend that even more."

Jan Vertonghen

On the opening stages
"We wanted to start well, did that, scored an early goal and after that they had to come out and that was to our advantage. It was a very good game from our point of view and after a Champions League match away in the week, a big trip to Cyprus, this is the perfect game for us."

On beating West Ham, APOEL and Huddersfield in the space of a week
"Maybe people underestimate how tough it is, three away games like that – three wins, tough games, big games. We can be very proud of our performances."

Christian Eriksen

On the goals we scored
"The first goal follows a mistake and the ball goes to Harry – he’s the one guy you don’t want to give the ball to in those situations. He scores and that gives them a bit of pressure and gives us more confidence. It makes more space for us and after that, a bit of a lucky pass to Ben but a great finish. After that it was soon 3-0 and we made it easier for ourselves."

On our fast start
"Every game is like that. We want to score as soon as possible and as many as possible. Of course, sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t. Today, they fell at the right time with good finishing from Harry and Ben. That makes it easier for us because you know the opponents are going to come forward and that opens up more space for us."

On Harry's second goal
"Harry is so confident at the moment and when he gets the ball there and he turns, it doesn’t matter if it’s left or right, he knows where the goal is and he showed that yet again."

Harry Kane

On the opening goal
"Those chances are always difficult. When you have so much time, a few things are going through your head, take it on my left, stick on my right, but I choose to stay on the right, the gap opened up on the near post and I was able to stick it away. I feel confident. I feel when I get into good positions I can work the goalkeeper and that was the case again today."

On his second goal
"I feel confident. I managed to find a bit of space and when I opened out onto my left foot I knew what I was going to do and it worked out perfectly. When I’m feeling like this, any chances around the box I feel I can work the goalkeeper and it’s good to see a couple of them go in."

On being clinical in front of goal
"We said today we had to come out with energy and get that early goal because Huddersfield have had a great start to the season, they are an energetic team themselves and we did that perfectly. We came out of the blocks flying, had early chances and kicked on from there. Once we went 3-0 up it was a matter of seeing the game out."
