'They're saying I'm on fire' - Son, Davies, Trippier, Lamela and Winks on CSKA

Posted on 28 September 2016  - 17:10

It was a fantasic night in Moscow and as they stepped out of the dressing room at Arena CSKA, we were there to ask for the thoughts of Ben Davies, Kieran Trippier, Harry Winks, Erik Lamela and matchwinner Heung-Min Son.

Always in control, we just needed that clear-cut chance and it arrived on 71 minutes when Lamela played in Son to score the only goal against the Russian champions.

We ended with 22 attempts at goal to CSKA's eight and with Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco drawing in France, we climbed above the German side into second place in Group E.

Next up, a trip to Bayer Leverkusen on October 18 before we play the Bundesliga side at Wembley on November 2. Tickets are on general sale and selling fast - details here...

Kieran Trippier

On his CL debut and playing more games...
"Ever since I was a young boy I've always wanted to play at the highest level, I've been given the opportunity and I fully enjoyed it. Hopefully I can keep training well and every opportunity I get I'll keep playing well. It's only my second game (this season) but I'm delighted, it's the Champions League! I'll keep training hard, obviously Kyle Walker has been doing very well so I've just got to keep training hard and make sure I'm ready when I'm called upon and I'll do my best for the team."

Harry Winks

What did Mauricio say as you went on for your CL debut?
"It was to go on and do what Dele was doing really in terms of going forward, helping to link the play and getting the ball but mainly to give a little bit more cover to Victor defensively, to help out defensively, make it a little bit more solid and hopefully try to make us a little bit more compact."

On the atmosphere afterwards...
"Everyone’s just delighted that we’ve got the three points. It was a tough game, a tough atmosphere as well, their fans were brilliant so for us, just to get the three points in such a tough game, it was special and everyone’s delighted, we really are."

Ben Davies

What changed from our opening Champions League game against Monaco?
"It’s difficult to say. It’s a totally different game, it was a lot more tactical, we were a bit more patient, we didn’t force the issue and we were always confident the goal was going to come at some point. It’s always difficult when you play against a team that puts men behind the ball and makes it hard for you to create chances. We probably got suckered into a few sloppy mistakes in the first 20 minutes but we got into the game, I thought we controlled it for long periods and when the goal came it was nice to hang on."

On our game management at 1-0 up...
"It can be a tough situation especially when the team starts putting the pressure on you and you can’t seem to get that goal on the counter-attack, or maybe there’s a couple of minutes where things aren’t going right but that’s when you’ve got to slow the game down and start to play a bit more direct. That’s what we did."

Heung-Min Son

On the reaction of his team-mates to another goal...
"They are just joking to me sometimes, saying 'you're on fire' or something like this. I also laugh. I’m very happy, everyone is just laughing, making happy jokes."

Erik Lamela

On a 'crucial' win...
"It’s a very tough place to play, far from home, but we won and that’s important. We needed it after the first Champions League defeat and getting the victory was crucial. The team is going well. We needed this win against CSKA and now we are in a better position in the group stage."
