Janssen on penalty, Harrison on debut, Vorm and more Liverpool reactions

Penalties, debuts, saves and rising stars – there were plenty of talking points coming out of Tuesday night’s narrow EFL Cup defeat to Liverpool when Vincent Janssen, Shayon Harrison, Michel Vorm and Eric Dier joined us for their post-match interviews.

Vincent scored his second penalty in the competition, following his effort against Gillingham last month, to give us hope of a second-half comeback on Merseyside while young striker Shayon Harrison went on for his debut with 10 minutes left as we chased the game – and might have scored an equaliser when Erik Lamela picked him out in space, but the teenager’s first touch unfortunately let him down.

Michel Vorm kept us in with a chance with some fine saves as one of 10 players who came into the starting line-up, with only Eric Dier retaining his place from the team that drew at Bournemouth at the weekend – the England man reverting to his holding midfield role and wearing the captain’s armband for the first time.

Here’s a look at what the players had to say…

Vincent Janssen

On difficulty of taking a penalty at Anfield
“For me it doesn’t matter. It’s just a penalty, you have to score it and I have enough confidence for that. It doesn’t matter for me where it is or how long since I last scored, I just saw the penalty, I wanted to score it and that’s what I did.”

On pattern of the game
“I think both teams had a lot of chances. Michel saved a lot of chances for them and we also had some opportunities at the end. I think we were unlucky to lose.”

On personal momentum going into the weekend
“Of course, for a striker it’s always nice to score but at the end I’m disappointed with the loss because I think we could have done some more in this game.”

Shayon Harrison

On the feeling after his debut
“It’s a bit surreal to be honest. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time and now it’s finally arrived I’m very, very happy. It’s just a disappointing result of course. It was a great atmosphere though and it was everything I expected to be honest – I was just really relishing the moment. The chance I had was a bit unfortunate and I’m disappointed with it but I’m still happy that I got out there.”

On his late opportunity
“I just wanted to get it down as quickly as possible and try to get my shot off. I think I rushed it a bit. I’ll definitely learn from that whole experience. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

On Mauricio’s instructions upon his introduction
“He just told me to go out there and do what I do best really. He’s shown a lot of belief in me and I thank him a lot for that, I’m really appreciative. He gave me a lot of confidence to go out there and play my best. It was a great experience for me, playing against Liverpool. They’re a top side and I can’t wait to try to get out there for us again.”

Michel Vorm

On the efforts of our young players
“I was 100 per cent proud of them and that’s also what I said to the boys in the dressing room as well. If you see the atmosphere before the game, it was unbelievable. I’ve played here a few times already but it always impresses me and so imagine what it’s like if you’re that young and you’re here for the first time. I think it’s something they can take with them and if you want to be a better player you have to play these kinds of games and learn from it.”

On the match overall
“I think it was quite an exciting game for the fans to watch. There were opportunities for us to maybe get a bit more at the end after we scored for 2-1 but you could see that Liverpool were a good team. They created a few chances but we were in it until the end and it’s a shame we lost.”

Eric Dier

On the performance of younger stars
“All the youngsters did very well tonight. It’s a great test to come and play here at Anfield – it’s one of the biggest stadiums in the country with a lot of history so if you can handle yourself here then you can handle yourself anywhere really. It’s a great test for them and a great moment for them to play here so hopefully they can build on that. We’re disappointed that we’ve been knocked out but now you forget about it and move on.”
