Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s first-half strike proved the difference between the sides in the end, with Hugo called upon to deny Paul Pogba on more than one occasion.
His fellow French international Moussa gave us some fresh impetus down the right in the second period but ultimately we couldn’t fashion enough opportunities to take something from the game.
Here’s what Hugo, Moussa and Toby, who marked his first Premier League appearance since October 15 after returning from a knee injury, had to say afterwards…
Was this an opportunity missed?
“It’s a bit frustrating because on the pitch, we don’t feel they are better than us. Of course, they have some talented and great players in their team but we had good control of the game and we were a bit unlucky with the goal because we lost the ball and they benefited straight away with the one-on-one from Mkhitaryan. That’s football and that can happen. We had a good performance and at the end it’s a frustrating result. We need to look forward. Next week is very decisive with two home games and I hope that will help us take a step forward.”
On the feeling of frustration
“It’s never easy to come to Old Trafford. It’s a huge club but on the field, we don’t feel the difference. This is our level and sometimes the result can depend on mistakes, on moments. Manchester United didn’t make mistakes, defensively they applied themselves and it was the same for us but we just need to learn about this game and look forward to Hull on Wednesday night.”
On the outcome
“We’re all disappointed about the result. We came here to play well and try to get the three points. I thought we played well and deserved more, a point at the minimum, but we lost and we’re all disappointed.”
On his intentions upon stepping off the bench
“I came on and tried to bring some energy, tried to run forward – those are my qualities. I tried my best to help the team but it wasn’t enough to get us to 1-1. We need to learn from this game, we need to analyse what was good and what wasn’t good and be ready for Wednesday.”
Thoughts on the pattern of the game
“It’s always frustrating when you don’t win. It’s about details today. Unfortunately we got a goal against us when we lost a ball where we can’t lose it and then we tried, but we didn’t bring the quality we normally bring to beat a team. It’s about details. If Victor (Wanyama) can get a good header on the ball (with his second-half chance) it’s 1-1 and the game changes. That’s football. We have to focus on the next game now, get the points there and get back to business.”
On competitive levels
“If we’d brought more quality I think we could have beaten them. As I said, it’s details, they finished the goal, we didn’t and that’s the difference. We have to learn from our mistakes and improve, improve, improve. There are a lot of games coming so we can make it up, we just have to bring the quality back to our game. Everyone is gutted, everyone is sad because we felt we could have got at least a point here, so that’s frustrating.”
