'Leicester game means a lot' - Dier on captaincy, Anfield and Foxes

Posted on 26 October 2016  - 12:45

Where to start with Eric Dier at Anfield? His pride at being skipper against Liverpool? The team’s battling display? The fact he’s approaching 100 games for us? Leicester on Saturday? They were all subjects on the table in the tunnel but the midfielder was only looking one way - forward to facing the Foxes at the Lane.

Eric led the team out for the first time for the EFL Cup fourth round encounter.

Daniel Sturridge scored twice (nine and 64 minutes) to put the home side in a commanding position 2-0 up but we rallied, replied via Vincent Janssen’s penalty and gave everything to find an equaliser that ultimately eluded us.

“We’re disappointed that we’ve been knocked out but now you forget about it and move on.,” said Eric, who is now on 98 appearances for us in all competitions.

“We’ve now got a massive game against Leicester which will mean a lot to everyone for different reasons so everyone is now fully focused on that.

“I feel like we were in a title race with them last season and they got the better of us in the game at home and that changed where the league went. It’s an important game for us.”

Eric found out about the captaincy in the absence of Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane just before kick-off.

“It was a very proud moment for me, I’m delighted that the manager gave me the chance but obviously disappointed that I couldn’t captain us to a victory,” he said, honest as ever.

“I like to think that regardless of whether or not I’m captain then I’m the same kind of person on the pitch. It was a very nice moment for me and it’s important to just be yourself.

“I didn’t know until now that I was getting so close to 100 appearances for Tottenham so that’ll be another big moment for me.

“I couldn’t have imagined two years ago that I’d be in this position.

“It’s fantastic for me but I want to build on that and I want to keep improving my appearances and maybe get the armband a couple more times as well.”
