Davinson: ‘It was lucky at the end… but we didn’t need luck to win overall’

Sun 11 February 2018, 19:13|Tottenham Hotspur

Davinson Sanchez savoured north London derby victory for the first time before immediately turning his attentions to Turin.

Our powerful young defender, a summer signing from Ajax, was in the thick of the action as we triumphed 1-0 over Arsenal at Wembley on Saturday.

After making some crucial interceptions over the course of the game, the Colombian international had a heart-in-the-mouth moment right at the end when Alexandre Lacazette made a run inside him and was through on goal – only to drag wide with just Hugo Lloris to beat.

The most relieved person of the 83,000-plus inside the national stadium, Davinson underlined his joy at winning the game before shifting his focus to Tuesday night’s Champions League trip to Juventus.

I feel so, so, so good! It’s a special feeling because it’s a derby and we’ve won.

“It was a really good game from everyone, we worked so hard, it was intense but we tried to play, created a lot of chances and it was an unbelievable win for us. This game was about character, it was about taking the better decisions and scoring the goal.

“Now we go to Juventus where we have a big game in the Champions League and again we will go there to try to take the victory. After this game we have more confidence for that.”

Asked for his take on the big chance for Arsenal to equalise in stoppage time, Davinson explained: “I saw the ball, I tried to anticipate the play but the ball… I don’t know what happened with it and it moved a little bit to my left side.

“When I saw Lacazette on the ball I tried to work a little bit for him not to take the better decision to finish the action. It was lucky for us but we didn’t need luck to win this game. Always you worry a little bit in that situation because we did a lot of work to win this game, but the result was deserved.”
