'Out of luck' - Eriksen, Lloris and Vertonghen react to Blues loss

There was a clear and understandable sense of frustration among the players after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Wembley.

We dominated for long periods against our bitter rivals but were undone by two goals from Marcos Alonso, the latter coming just over two minutes from time, shortly after Michy Batshuayi’s own goal made it 1-1.

Christian Eriksen, Hugo Lloris and Jan Vertonghen all put their emotions to one side to speak to us after the game. Here’s what they said…

Christian Eriksen

Thoughts on the game
“We’re all disappointed. We should have got more but we didn’t. It’s frustrating – Chelsea at Wembley, we don’t seem to get any luck. We had the chances, they had a few as well but we dominated the game. We weren’t as clinical as them.”

On playing at Wembley
“Football-wise, there is no real difference. In fact, it only really helps us with possession when we have the ball on a bigger pitch. As players, we don’t read anything into it and I don’t think anyone should on the outside either. We will get it turned around.”

How do you feel after losing in that manner?
“I’m very disappointed with the result, obviously, but in terms of the performance, what else can we do? It was a great performance. We put in a lot of good energy, even after going 1-0 down we kept our chin up and kept playing our basics and we can be proud of that.”

On our control of the game
“It’s not possible to dominate as much as we have done, we created so many chances but we missed out in the final third, the last touch – it’s about luck, all the luck was on Chelsea’s side. We can keep the performance in our minds because it was really good and keep working hard and prepare for the next game.”

Thoughts on the outcome
“It’s so clear that we deserved to win this game. In my opinion, it was about a bit of luck that we missed. We hit the post and had a lot of clear chances, even against such a strong team defensively. We had the chances and we should have scored, simple as that.”

How did you find the atmosphere around Wembley?
“If I’m a neutral, these games are unbelievable to play in – we give our best, Chelsea give their best and there is so much respect for each other, but there are no friends on the pitch. Then you get these games. It was an unbelievable game to play in, unbelievable to watch but with the wrong score.”
