Ben Davies: 'We have to stick together now'

As he solemnly contemplated Wednesday night’s Champions League loss to Bayer Leverkusen, the message from Ben Davies was simple but powerful: “These are the times when true characters come out.”

We drew a blank against the Bundesliga side for the second time in just over a fortnight, but Kevin Kampl’s opportunistic second-half strike after a deflection saw the visitors run out 1-0 winners at Wembley.

After taking a moment to reflect on what transpired at the national stadium, left-back Ben opened up about the sense of frustration emanating from the changing room and called for everyone at the club to rally together in order to get back to winning ways.

“Of course it was frustrating, it’s never nice when you come off the field after losing and we’ve only got ourselves to look at really,” said the Welsh international.

“When the goals aren’t coming we’re going to have to look at what we can do to create them but we can’t put the blame on anybody. It’s hard to point fingers at people, we’re not going to do that. As a team we have to stick together now and these are the times when true characters come out.

“Every team goes through tough times and it’s up to us to stick together as players, fans, coaches – the lot – and work ourselves through it.”

Asked how the players will be looking to respond in this weekend’s North London derby, Ben added: “If we win on Sunday it’ll give us all a big boost going into the international break.

“We’re a confident group, we’ve shown we can put good performances in against any team and Sunday is going to be no different. We have to be ready for what they’re going to throw at us but on the other hand they’re not going to see it as an easy game either.”
