West Ham 1-0 Spurs - Mauricio's reaction

Fri 05 May 2017, 22:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino was left 'very disappointed' after our outstanding winning run in the Premier League ended at West Ham on Friday night.

Our first visit to the London Stadium won't be one that lingers long in the memory after Manuel Lanzini's second half goal secured victory for the home side.

In doing so, our Club record run of nine-successive wins in the Premier League came to an end and we missed the opportunity to cut Chelsea's lead to a single point. The lead remains four and we now wait for Chelsea to play Middlesbrough on Monday.

It was a combination of the performance, losing a derby and the bigger picture of the title race that left Mauricio feeling low.

“It was a game we must win to try to reduce the gap and we weren’t capable of winning,” said Mauricio.

“We all feel disappointed because we didn't show the same performance we showed five days ago against Arsenal. That has disappointed us a lot, but this is football and we need to understand this was a difficult game, we tried but it was impossible.”

How did you see it tactically?
Mauricio: “It was difficult to move the ball quickly, we were slow and we didn't have the movement in front like the last games. There are many reasons that it wasn't our best day.”

It’s a cauldron out there, 50,000 fans wanting to beat us…
Mauricio: “Yes, but that's football, if you want to win the title you will find the same atmosphere in every stadium, all against you. That wasn’t a problem, the problem was that we didn't perform in the way we usually perform.”

Is it important now not to forget all the good work that has got us to this point, the nine wins on the trot?
Mauricio: “It's difficult to think about that now. It's true that at the end of the season you can assess better and analyse the season but now it's so difficult to speak about 'so far, so good' because when you have the chance to reduce the gap to Chelsea to one point and you lose, it's so difficult to find the positives.”

I guess you start again in training and get ready for a huge game next weekend…
Mauricio: “Now we rest a little and try to prepare for the next game. It will be a very important game, the last at White Hart Lane against Manchester United with the possibility of finishing at White Hart Lane in the best way.”
