Spurs 6-0 Millwall - Mauricio's reaction

Posted on 12 March 2017  - 18:45

Mauricio Pochettino said the plan was to be ‘focused from the first moment’ as we ran out 6-0 winners against Millwall to book a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

In fine form in League One and 17 unbeaten coming into this game, Millwall kept us out for half-hour but it was one-way traffic even before Christian Eriksen’s key opening goal. Five more followed with Heung-Min Son netting his first Spurs hat-trick, Dele Alli on target and the biggest cheer of the day for Vincent Janssen’s strike off the bench, our fifth.

Our 32 efforts at goal to Millwall’s four told the story as we booked our place in the last four of the competition with Manchester City and Arsenal. The semi-final line-up will be completed when Chelsea take on Manchester United on Monday night. The draw will follow that game.

“We played very well, I’m very pleased with the performance, I thought it was fantastic,” said Mauricio. “The job is done and we’re in the semi-final at Wembley.”

Below: Mauricio speaks to Spurs TV after the win against Millwall

Millwall came to frustrate us so how important was that first goal?

Mauricio: “We started well and after creating a lot of chances we scored and dominated. We controlled the game. I’m happy because in theory this was a difficult game. They arrived at White Hart Lane in very good form, they beat three Premier League teams in the FA Cup and the way we took the game was fantastic.”

We were relentless from start to finish and still looking to score at 5-0 up in added time!
Mauricio: “That is the mentality we need to keep and to improve every day. You can only improve if you are available to train every day, every training session and it’s not a secret, if you give your best every day you can achieve that.”

It was great for Sonny to score his first hat-trick for us…
Mauricio: “Yes, it’s very good for him, very good for the team. His performance was fantastic and to finish with three goals is special.”

And how about Vincent’s goal and the reaction?
Mauricio: “When a player suffers a lot, when you don’t score when you are a striker, it’s always a tough period in your career and for that reason, all the team-mates were very happy to see him score again.”
