Mauricio Pochettino wasn’t pulling any punches after our 2-0 loss at Liverpool.

Hopes were high leading up to a key Premier League encounter but we were caught in a whirlwind in the first half at Anfield.

Liverpool had their high press working to perfection, we couldn’t find any rhythm in our play and we found ourselves 2-0 down inside 20 minutes with the lively Sadio Mane scoring twice in two minutes.

It was backs to the wall in that first half-hour - Hugo Lloris denied Mane a hat-trick on a couple of occasions - and although we created a couple of chances before the break it was always going to be an uphill battle after that opening period.

We kept the hosts in check in the second half and with few opportunities at either end, it stayed 2-0 – our first league defeat in 10.

“I need to be honest, like always, and we were poor,” conceded Mauricio.

“It’s important to realise when you compete for big things, you need to start the game not in the way we started today, we were sloppy without aggression, a little bit ‘let’s go to the pitch and play football’ but that’s not our game, it’s about competing and we didn’t compete enough against Liverpool. They were better than us and deserved the three points.”

You said to us off camera that sometimes it’s good to have a reality check…
Mauricio: “Yes, it’s important to realise that you always need to compete in the Premier League and always give your best. For different reasons that we need to analyse the team, collectively, didn’t show. It’s not about quality, because we have quality, it’s aggression to try to win the three points.”

That lack of aggression is not like us…
Mauricio: “No, not normally, but sometimes it happens and we need to be clever, to be strong, to analyse, to find out why and to change.”
