Spurs 3-2 West Ham - Mauricio's reaction

"You must always believe." It's one of Mauricio Pochettino's footballing mantras - and the manager certainly believed when Harry Kane put the ball on the penalty spot with the scoreline at 2-2 in injury time of Saturday's thriller against West Ham.

"No doubt at all," said Mauricio on what he thought the outcome would be. Harry fired home and a thrilling comeback was complete, 3-2, the Lane delirious.

That wasn't the case as West Ham led in the first half but we looked to have turned the game around when Harry Winks capped a promising first start in the Premier League with the equaliser - his first goal - on 51 minutes.

Our best spell followed - Darren Randolph saved point-blank from Eric Dier - but we were halted in our tracks when Vincent Janssen was called to have pulled Winston Reid in the box and Manuel Lanzini fired home from the penalty spot for 2-1 to the Hammers.

Mauricio introduced Heung-Min Son and Dele Alli off the bench as we tried to rescue the game and Sonny delivered. First, he crossed low for Harry to tap home with a minute left and then just a minute later, he was laid out by Havard Nordtveit in the box and Harry did the rest.

"There are a lot of feelings now," said Mauricio. "First of all, we’re very happy and pleased for the character we showed. Maybe it wasn’t our best game but you cannot always play well and you always need to show character.

"It was a very difficult game. From the beginning, they were very aggressive and it was difficult to play.

"The second half was fantastic and it just a shame we conceded the second goal from the penalty because at that moment, we were much better. The important thing was that we continued in that way, kept going, always believed and how we won the game was fantastic in the end."

On character

Mauricio: "That is the good thing we need to take out of the game. Never forget that always believing is the most important thing, work hard and that is the main thing we need to keep for the future. Football is never finished until the final whistle and if you believe, keep working and try to find the best situation to score, anything can happen in football."

How big was this win?

Mauricio: "It’s our 12th game in the Premier League and we’re still unbeaten. That’s fantastic for us but you know the last month has been tough for us and it’s fantastic to discover that feeling again for the games ahead. The first is a game we must win against Monaco and it’s for that reason we need to have the mentality and feeling that we can go to Monaco and win."

What were you thinking on the penalty?

Mauricio: "No doubt at all. I celebrated before, and that was my mistake! I started to celebrate when it was (we were awarded) a penalty! It was an emotional game and for us, a very important three points to be very close to the top after the last month where we’ve suffered a lot."
