The French international goalkeeper and skipper was in inspired form in Germany, particularly in the second half as he pulled off a string of saves to keep the scoreline at 0-0.
His crowning moment arrived a few minutes after the interval when he performed something resembling a combat roll across his own goal-line, sweeping the ball along with him, to somehow prevent Javier Hernandez’s close-range shot from going in when the former Manchester United man seemed destined to score.
Having kept a clean sheet despite heavy Leverkusen pressure in the second period, Hugo was duly selected as Man of the Match by fans on Twitter and Facebook, taking 76 per cent of the overall votes.
