My First Spurs Christmas - Victor Wanyama

Tue 20 December 2016, 14:45|Tottenham Hotspur

We caught up with this year’s new arrivals to find out about their plans for the festive period and how they’ve celebrated in the past. First up, Victor Wanyama…

VICTOR WANYAMA

National team: Kenya.
Previous clubs: Beerschot AC, Celtic, Southampton.

What will you do on Christmas Day?
My family is travelling over from Kenya so I will spend my time with them. It will be great to see everyone and to experience Christmas here in London.

How does this differ from past Christmases for you?
This is actually the first time that I’ll be having my family visiting me in England over Christmas. In recent years when I played for Southampton I’ve been invited to a friend’s house and have obviously had matches to prepare for in the Premier League as usual over here, but it will be great to spend time with my family this year.

What is traditional at Christmas in Kenya?
The families get together and eat a lot of food – all different kinds of dishes really. They exchange their presents on the evening of December 24 and then on December 25 everyone has lunch and dinner together.

What is your favourite festive meal?
I like chicken and we also have chapatis back home, which I always enjoy.

What do you wish for at Christmas?
It will be a good gift for me to have a good game when we go to my old club Southampton on December 28.

What was your most memorable gift as a child?
It was a toy phone that played music, which I received from my uncle Paul when I was a young boy in Nairobi.

Tomorrow, we’ll hear from Georges-Kevin Nkoudou…
