Thirty years after his remarkable, record-breaking 49-goal season, Clive Allen has been impressed by the latest sharp-shooter in town.

Heung-Min Son’s exploits in September – five goals, all away, including four in the Premier League – have seen him nominated for the EA Sports Player of the Month award and the Carling Goal of the Month prize for his spectacular second strike in the 4-0 win at Stoke.

His performances have caught the eye of Clive, who won the Golden Boot in 1986-87 after eclipsing the great Jimmy Greaves’ best-ever season, 42 goals in 1962-63 (44 if you include the Charity Shield).

Clive, who had 10 goals to his name by the end of September that famous season, likes how Sonny has stepped up in Harry Kane’s absence.

“I think Son looks really confident and comfortable within the group at the moment and his goalscoring is showing that he’s a taker of chances,” said Clive, who went on to score 85 goals in 134 appearances for us.

“That’s good news because with the unfortunate injury to Harry Kane, we needed someone to take on the mantle of scoring consistently.

“Son is really positive in the positions he’s getting into and then when the chances are being created, he’s been very clinical.”

Son scored twice at Stoke and twice at Middlesbrough in racking up 23 attempts at goal in the Premier League in September. “That illustrates that he’s getting into situations where he can take on chances and with that, he’s finding the goal consistently,” added Clive.

“He also has a change of direction and pace which is always vital, especially in one-on-one situations. As soon as you see him on the ball one-on-one you are confident he can go by the defender and with that in mind, team-mates will give him the ball and give him that opportunity to take players on.

“He looks a real danger at the moment and long may it continue.”
