We had chances to do that at Loftus Road as Paddy Kenny tipped over from Gareth Bale and then saved Rafa van der Vaart’s shot at full stretch.
But we went behind via Adel Taarabt’s free-kick in the 24th minute and despite dominating possession after that, we couldn’t find an equaliser as Kenny remained in fine form.
“It’s important with matches like this to score the first goal,” said first team coach Joe. “We came into the game with a positive attitude, but didn’t get that goal.
“It’s difficult, you concede a goal and the opposition is set-up to defend that lead. We found it difficult to break them down.
“They were hanging on at the end but we didn’t get the break. You need a break, we didn’t get one.
“We tried, we persevered, we probed away, changed it, but they showed a lot of resilience.
“It was a big game for both clubs. They weren’t going to make it easy for us and it’s been the same for other teams (at Loftus Road) in recent weeks.
“We knew it was going to be difficult. We’re playing for big stakes.”
