Danny Rose helped England Under-21s take a step towards the finals of the European Championships on Friday night.
The midfielder played the full 90 minutes as Stuart Pearce's men beat Romania 2-1 in the first leg of their play-off at Norwich City's Carrow Road.
Playing on the left wing Danny, on a season-long loan at Bristol City, had calls for a penalty waved away in the first half when he looked to be brought down by Cornel Rapa.
England eventually took the lead through Sunderland's Jordan Henderson in the 63rd minute but were rocked eight minutes later when Ryan Bertrand unluckily diverted home Rapa's shot.
However, United defender Chris Smalling turned the ball home from close range from a corner in the 83rd minute to ensure the Three Lions take an advantage into the second leg in Romania on Tuesday.
Kyle Walker was an unused substitute ar Carrow Road.
The winners of the seven play-off matches join hosts Denmark in the finals next summer.
