Final score: Colchester 1-3 Spurs

Posted on 24 July 2002  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Lee Barnard picked up the perfect belated birthday present at Layer Road - his first senior goal for the club.

The livewire striker turned 18 last Saturday and if his debut for the first team in our pre-season opener at Stevenage on Sunday wasn't enough at such a tender age, his first goal must surely have been the icing on the cake.

Barnard continues to impress as he makes his way up through the ranks.

Always exciting at Academy level, he more then held his own when he dipped into reserve football last season and having now made the step up, he will be looking to excel for Colin Calderwood's men again this term.

In the meantime though, with Steffen Iversen, Les Ferdinand and Teddy Sheringham all unavailable, Barnard has taken his chance to shine with the seniors.

His second half display in Richard Wilkins' Testimonial against Colchester caught the eye and was capped with our third goal, a sweetly dispatched volley after Goran Bunjevcevic's exquisite pass.

'Bunje' appears to be finding his feet again after eight months out and with the likes of Gary Doherty building on his fitness - and on the scoresheet - after a lengthy period out and newcomer Milenko Acimovic continuing to shine, it's a case of so far, so good.

Acimovic almost scored his first goal for the club inside two minutes. Darren Anderton swung in a near-post corner and the Slovenian star looped a header towards goal only for McKinney to claw the effort from under the bar.

In a scrappy, stop-start opening period of the game, McGleish's attempted cross bounced across the top of the bar and McKinney, a trialist, saved well as Doherty tried to guide Simon Davies' header in at the far post. Normal:

It wasn't long before Doherty opened his pre-season account. With 30 minutes on the clock, Anderton swung in a free-kick from the right and the big man converted a classic header, back across the McKinney from 12 yards.

Acimovic, with a bag of tricks on the ball, picked out Davies' burst into the box only for the Welshman to lob wide.

Colchester hit back after 36 minutes. The danger signs were there when McGleish's header from Keith's corner was deflected over and from the following Duguid corner, Johnson headed home from 10 yards.

Davies was in the thick of it again to close the half, this time his volley blocked bravely by McGiven.

The second half started brightly and we led after 48 minutes. Matty Etherington burst down the left, Sergei Rebrov's shot was blocked but Oyvind Leonhardsen arrived just in time to drill the rebound home from 20 yards.

Rebrov curled inches wide from the edge of the box on 54 minutes and after another scrappy spell, interupted by a number of home substitutes, we stretched the lead further.

Bunjevcevic brought the ball out of defence and spotted Barnard in space, the youngster controlled the pass in his stride before volleying into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

Morgan fluffed the chance to reduce the deficit when he failed to connect with Keith's cross and Barnard went sent through again, this time by Gus Poyet, but this time was forced wide.

Rebrov went close when he volleyed Etherington's deep cross down and over the bar and the lively winger turned provider again with three minutes left, this time John Jackson's dink landing just over.
