The midfielder looked full of running in what was only his second start since early December but the boss was wary of the possibility of aggravating his injury on the half surface.
Christian Ziege also came off earlier than planned in the second half with a slight ankle knock in what was his first start since Boxing Day although this was simply as a precaution.
"The pitch was very firm so I had to take Jamie off at half-time, I wanted to play him for the full 90 minutes but you have to protect him on a pitch like that.
"Christian also came off with a slight ankle problem, nothing too serious, but he was coming onto a good game and needed 90 minutes under his belt, so that was a bit of a blow."
Glenn Hoddle explained that he substituted Jamie Redknapp earlier than planned against DC United because of a firm pitch at the RFK Stadium.
