The Big Interview - Jan Vertonghen

Posted on 25 April 2016  - 11:45

A lot is said about the value of experience at this time of the season.

But as we try to cut Leicester’s lead at the top of the Premier League to five points against West Brom at the Lane this evening (8pm), Jan Vertonghen is starting to think otherwise.

“Sometimes I think experience might be overrated,” smiled Jan, in a reflective mood ahead of this weekend’s fixtures. “If you see the way this team plays, we’re just enjoying so much playing together. I can see us playing like this until the end of the season.”

Jan spoke to us at length about the mentality of the squad at this stage of the season, his return from injury and tonight’s match against West Brom.

Look out for more from Jan in tonight’s official matchday programme…

Tell us about the mentality of the players at this crucial stage of the season…
Jan:
“We want to go as far as possible, it’s not in our hands but we’re doing everything to make everyone around the club proud.  We’re already in quite a good position, second, hopefully getting into the Champions League and then we’ve achieved our goal – but obviously other goals showed up! It just think we have to keep doing what we’re doing.”

How did we get to where we are?
Jan: “A lot has to do with the gaffer and the technical staff. The key of everything is hard work and that’s what we’ve done for the last two seasons, worked so hard, we’ve done everything to be fitter and better than our opponents and then the quality can rise, and this team has lots of quality.”

What are your thoughts on West Brom?
Jan: “This is a tough team to beat and they’ve showed that in the last couple of seasons under Tony Pulis. They can cause problems, they are strong at the back and they tested us at The Hawthorns earlier in the season. That was a tough game for us. If we play like we did in the last couple of weeks, especially at home, we should be okay.”

Finally, tell us how you’ve managed to slip seamlessly back into the team after just about three months out injured?
Jan: “Maybe that’s experience! The funny thing is when you are injured and people talk to you about being out they say ‘but it must have been nice to have a holiday’. I just think ‘what do you think I’m doing, just relaxing at home until my knee is good again?’ A lot of work goes into it, especially when you are injured. You see the lads training and you see what you are missing. It was quite tough sometimes but it makes you understand what you miss when you aren’t out there.”
