Transfer deadline day saw attacking midfielder Nathan Oduwa and goalkeeper Luke McGee head out to join Peterborough United in League One.
They quickly had a game to prepare for as the Posh hosted Swindon Town last Saturday. Both players began the afternoon on the bench with Nathan called upon 12 minutes from time with the scores level at 2-2.
Ultimately there would be no further score but attentions have now turned to this Saturday’s home match against Port Vale with goalkeeper Luke receiving some encouraging words from fellow stopper and our captain Hugo Lloris as he competes for the number one jersey at the ABAX Stadium.
“After a couple of years with us around the first team, he has improved a lot,” Hugo said of Luke. “He’s learned a lot with Toni Jimenez (goalkeeping coach) and I think today he is ready to play for a new club. He is ready to compete and that’s important for him, to get games and to put on performances and I hope he will do well for his club. I think that’s very important for him.”
Another of our youngsters enjoying some senior experience is midfielder Will Miller (pictured, below). The 20-year-old joined newly-promoted Championship side Burton Albion at the end of last month and was thrust straight into the starting line-up for their clash with neighbours Derby County on August 26. He played 54 minutes before being withdrawn as his side claimed a 1-0 victory.
"It's a big step, a higher level and I'm really looking forward to trying to make my mark,” said Will upon linking up with the Brewers. "It's important to be in this kind of environment, around the lads in the dressing room and to do what I can to help the team. Hopefully I can bring goals and work-rate.”
Next up for Burton is a trip to Wolves this Saturday (September 10).
On the continent, young midfielder Filip Lesniak headed out to join Czech side Slovan Liberec in July and, after appearing on the bench for their 2-1 Europa League third qualifying round first leg victory over Austrian outfit Admira on July 28, he made his debut as a second-half substitute in place of ex-Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Milan Baros in a 3-0 Czech league defeat at Mlada Boleslav three days later.
He has since featured off the bench for the second leg of the Admira tie – a 2-0 victory – and was an unused substitute in a 1-1 league draw at home to Vysočina Jihlava.
In Italy, defender Federico Fazio scored on his first appearance for Roma in a 1-0 friendly victory over Latina on August 10 and has so far made four competitive appearances – in both legs of Roma’s 4-1 aggregate defeat to Porto in Champions League qualifying and in Serie A matches at home to Udinese (4-0 win) and away to Cagliari (2-2 draw).
Just prior to the international break, midfielder Nabil Bentaleb made his debut for German side FC Schalke 04 as a 74th-minute substitute in their 1-0 Bundesliga defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt. Next up for Schalke is a home match against Bayern Munich on Friday, September 9.
