Spurs vs United (FAYC) - Kieran's preview

Posted on 8 February 2015  - 12:41

Kieran McKenna has urged our Academy players to overcome any pre-match nerves and make sure they perform to their full potential in Monday night’s FA Youth Cup tie against Manchester United at White Hart Lane.

We take on the Red Devils in the Fifth Round of the competition, looking to make further progress after impressive victories against Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers in previous rounds.

Paired with United and playing at our world-famous stadium, Under-18s Coach Kieran admits we’ve a “glamour tie” on our hands.

But he’s keen for our young players to ensure they seize their opportunity in front of what he hopes will be a large crowd at the Lane.

“It’s a game that we’re really looking forward to,” said Kieran, whose side registered a 3-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League last weekend.

“It’s a glamour tie – we’re pleased to be playing in the main stadium and to be testing ourselves against a big club like Manchester United. That all brings an attraction to the tie, which will hopefully bring in a good crowd.

“I’m sure the players will be very excited as well. For some of them it’ll be the first time they’ve played at White Hart Lane and that excitement I’m sure will bring some nerves. We’ll obviously speak to them about how best to deal with that and hopefully when the whistle blows on Monday night the boys can settle down quickly and play their football in the way that they normally would.”

The two teams are sat third and fourth in their respective league tables and, as such, Kieran expects an interesting contest.

“United are a team that we know well because we spent a week up there earlier in the season,” he added. “We combined our training with theirs at Carrington as a mode of developing both clubs’ players, so we’ve got a really good relationship with their academy.

“We know there will be a lot of good footballers on the pitch on Monday so hopefully we’ll have the better game and come out on the right side of the scoreline.”

Kick-off on Monday evening is at 7pm. Tickets will be available in person at the ticket office or by calling 0344 844 0102, option 2, on Monday between 9.30am and 5pm.

We’ll have live updates from the match on Twitter @SpursOfficial, along with a match report here on tottenhamhotspur.com after the game.
