We surged into a 2-0 lead after 16 minutes thanks to goals from Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale, who also fired just wide and had a free-kick saved in that opening spell.
Liverpool hit back, created chances before the break and then had the better of the second half, pulled a goal back via Gareth’s unfortunate own goal on 72 minutes and forced us to defend that 2-1 lead to the final whistle.
The victory made it two wins in four days at the Lane and lifted us into fifth place in the Premier League, just three points behind third-placed Chelsea.
“We were extremely good in the first half,” said Andre. “We managed to go 2-0 up, deserved it and it was important.
“Liverpool want to fight for the same objectives as us and at 2-0 down, they had to have a go. We didn’t look as good as the game finished, but we looked good at the beginning and we have to compliment the team for that.
"The players did well to hold on to the result. They showed great strength of character and the reward is a very important three points.
"It’s a result that puts us close to third position and that’s where we want to be."
