So the midfielder was delighted to secure an ‘important three points’ and first win in the Premier League in such emphatic style on Sunday.
Gylfi - who made over 50 appearances for the Royals - played his part with a sublime pass to Aaron Lennon to set-up the first goal for Jermain Defoe.
He also had a shot cleared off the line in the first half as we dominated at the Madejski Stadium.
Gareth Bale and Jermain’s second goal put the issue beyond doubt before a late consolation from the home team made it a final 3-1 scoreline.
“It was important to get the three points here,” said Gylfi.
“We’ve been quite unlucky in our last two games, conceding late goals, and it was important for the team and the fans to get off the mark.
“Reading showed last season they are a strong team and hard to break down. They normally defend well but we created chances and it was good to get the goals.
"We’ve worked hard in training and it paid off.
“It’s fantastic to get our first win and now we can look forward, work hard again in the week and prepare for a hard game against Lazio and then QPR.”
Gylfi was looking forward to Thursday night’s clash against Lazio at the Lane, our first group game in the Europa League.
“They are a good team, it’s great to play in Europe and we’re looking forward to that game, trying to get off to a good start,” he added. “It will be important to get three points at home.”
