On March 11, six days before his 13th birthday, Ben (pictured, above, with his girlfriend Lauren Baker at the Lane recently) received two tickets from his uncle to attend our match against Southampton. Few could have predicted the amazing 7-2 victory that we enjoyed that day – yet Ben somehow did, earning him his own five minutes of fame among fellow fans at the back of the stand where he was sitting!
“I remember the anticipation building as we walked up the High Road from Seven Sisters, the smell of the burger stalls, the chants of ‘Come On You Spurs’ and the special feeling of knowing I was where I belong – this was home,” said Ben, picking up the story.
“Stopping off at the Megastore to buy the new away shirt, which I proudly got embossed with ‘Iversen 10’ on the back, it was then on to the Lane and what a crazy rollercoaster we had in store!
“Southampton took the lead in the 26th minute, we equalised in the 28th, then inexplicably Southampton went straight up the other end and made it 2-1. The murmurs of discontent started to build, but I turned to my uncle and in my youthful optimism, declared in a loud, spirited voice: ‘Don’t worry, we'll win this 7-2!’
“A comment of ‘I’d like to have your optimism, lad!’ came from an older chap sitting behind, but then it started! Darren Anderton levelled in the 39th minute, quickly Chris Armstrong gave us the lead in the 41st and on the stroke of half-time my man Steffen Iversen gave us breathing space, 4-2 at half-time.

“Already I was getting the ‘maybe you’re a good luck charm’ comments from a few people around us, but it continued in the second half as Chris Armstrong buried his second, then the Iversen show took over. In the 78th minute he bagged his second and on the stroke of full-time he completed his hat-trick to make it 7-2!
“My prediction had come true and comments of ‘he’s our good luck charm’ and ‘can he come every week?’ made me feel on top of the world. In reality it was the silky skills of David Ginola and the clinical finishing of Armstrong and Iversen that saw us home, but one wild prediction made me feel like the king of the Lane that day!”
