Steven Pienaar had a wry smile to himself on hearing next season’s fixture list.
The provisional list announced on Friday handed us a home match against the midfielder’s former club Everton on the opening weekend of the Barclays Premier League.
The match is scheduled for the Lane on Saturday, August 13 – all fixtures subject to change.
Steven joined us from Goodison Park in January and made 11 appearances last term, starting the famous win against AC Milan in the San Siro.
Those appearances didn’t include a match-up with the Toffees though – he won’t have to wait long this time around.
“It will be the first time I’ve faced Everton since moving to Spurs, I’m looking forward to it and I hope we take all three points to get a positive start to the season,” said Steven, who helped the Toffees gain a draw at the Lane last October.
“It’s always difficult when you face your old club but you have to stay focused.
“It’s a game that will test you mentally because you know all the players, the staff and what that club is all about.
“It’s the first game of the season and our supporters will want us to go all-out, especially at home.
“For us though, the key is to be patient, open them up and when we do, make sure we take our chances.”
