Starting in a five-man midfield, JJ was often the furthest forward supporting lone striker Wayne Rooney and his efforts were rewarded in the 40th minute.
Steven Gerrard started the move with pass wide left to Joe Cole, who beat his man, reached the byline and cut the ball back perfectly for JJ to tap in with his left foot from six yards.
In fine form at Spurs, JJ almost doubled his tally in the 54th minute when his left-foot drive was tipped around the post at fuill stretch by Swiss keeper Diego Benaglio, the save of the match.
JJ was substitued soon after that and Switzerland equalised through Eren Derdiyok but Shaun Wright-Phillips pounced on Gerrard's pass for the winner.
