Posted on 5 December 2000 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Spurs Reserves 0 West Ham Reserves 0
We knocked, knocked and knocked again but could not knock down stubborn West Ham’s defensive door at St Albans on Tuesday night.
Willem Korsten and Simon Davies both hit the woodwork in a frantic final 20 minutes but a youthful-looking Hammers side that worked from the first to last minute held on.
They might even have snatched it — as we piled bodies forward in search of the winner they broke away and forced a superb late double save from goalkeeper Ian Walker.
The first half was a lively, albeit scrappy affair as the ball fizzed around the sticky surface.
Korsten (pictured right) always looked to have that extra slice of class and came closest to opening the scoring in the 13th minute, flicking John Piercy’s cross wide.
Ian Hillier struck a sweet shot just over from 30 yards and a minute later Korsten turned Anwar Uddin inside out and flashed a shot straight at Steven Bywater.
Although we edged possession the Hammers carved out the best chance of the half. Ludwig Norbert played Gary Charles in down the right and the ex-Forest and Benfica full-back’s cross from the byline found Gavin Holligan at the near post six yards out — he could only divert the ball wide.
The final action of the half saw Piercy fire over from 20 yards.
There were more strikes on goal in the first five minutes of the second half than in the previous 45 minutes.
Hillier kicked it off in the 46th minute with a drive to the byline and a cross shot that Bywater did well to save at full stretch.
A minute later and a Hammers’ break left Norbert well placed in the area but Walker was equal to his effort with a fine save low to his left. Walker then had to tip Michael Ferrante’s 30-yard effort over and at the other end Toner’s effort from similar distance skidded into Bywater’s arms.
Chances were now coming thick and fast. In the space of two minutes Matthew Etherington’s half-chance from a poorly cleared free-kick was blocked by Charles, Korsten screwed wide when put through by Piercy and Toner side-footed wide from the edge of the area.
The Dutchman then clipped the crossbar when his 20-yard free-kick was deflected and Vega’s header from Jackson’s corner landed in Bywater’s arms.
Davies was next to rattle the woodwork after 79 minutes when his superbly struck effort from 25 yards left Bywater standing only to strike the foot of the upright and then Vega tamely headed over from Korsten’s deep cross.
West Ham could have grabbed the points when Walker (pictured left) was forced into a double save in the 85th minute. Hammers broke from deep, Amos Foweya’s pace took him away from Anthony Gardner and his drag back picked out Ferrante 15 yards out. He picked his spot only for Walker to save at full stretch and the goalkeeper was back on his feet to block Bullard’s follow up.
We still searched that elusive goal and as time ran out Mark Gower was inches away from Hillier’s cross before Gary Doherty, now up front, blazed over from 12 yards.
Spurs: Walker, Hillier, Gardner, Vega, Doherty, Toner, Davies, Jackson (Gower 70), Piercy (Fenn 70), Korsten, M Etherington.
West Ham: Bywater, Charles, Williams, Forbes, Uddin, Angus (Byrne 45), Norbert (Britton 83), Ferrante, Holligan (Foweya 70), C Etherington, Bullard.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
