A draw was about right after close calls at both ends although the home side will point to hitting the woodwork twice.
Baggies took the lead after 16 minutes before Jermain slotted from the spot having been brought down himself by Darren Purse on the half-hour.
We'll now do it again at the Lane on Saturday February 12 with our planned Premier League trip to Charlton to be rearranged.
We kicked off with six changes to the side that lost at Palace last weekend.
In came fit-again Fredi Kanoute and Simon Davies, Michael Brown was back from suspension, Thimothee Atouba started after coming on for injured Reto Ziegler last week while Anthony Gardner and Stephen Kelly came in for Noureddine Naybet and Noe Pamarot respectively.
West Brom had the better of the early exchanges and there could be few complaints when the went ahead.
Earnshaw had already had two shots at goal and struck the woodwork when Wallwork's cross cleared Gardner and the Welsh striker volleyed home from six yards.
We gradually worked our way into the game with Kanoute failing to hit the target twice and Davies forcing Hoult into a low save to his right after 28 minutes.
Two minutes later it was level as Defoe controlled a high ball on the edge of the box, turned outside Purse who certainly appeared to bring him down, despite home protests. Defoe certainly had no doubts, grabbing the ball with his hands as he hit the deck and he made no mistake from the spot, drilling low to Hoult's right.
The rest of the half was scrappy although the alarms rang again when Robinson and Edman looked at each other instead of dealing with Greening's cross - it was a carbon copy of Palace's first goal last week but this time Earnshaw volleyed over from close range.
The second half saw close calls at both ends. Defoe failed to hit the target from close range from Davies' clever pass the the same pair combined 10 minutes later with Defoe's shot this time deflected wide.
Baggies hit back and struck the woodwork again after 61 minutes when Greening's skidding shotbeat Robinson. Seconds later and the save of the match from Robinson as Kanu danced through only for the keeper's left hand to deny him one-on-one.
Our best chance of the half fell to Davies, rushing in from the right to meet Defoe's cross but missing the target under pressure from Clement.
Two substitutions on either side interrupted the flow of the game and there was one final chance as Robbie Keane latched on to Purse's poor header back, flicked the ball wide of Hoult but too wide and drilled the ball into the side-netting.
