Here we meet Pete, a heavy smoker who was told by his GP that he was at risk of losing his leg unless he quit. After numerous unsuccessful attempts, his life was changed when he was introduced to Ida, the Spurs Nurse, who delivers pop-up health checks in the community, including a stop smoking clinic at the Day Mer Centre in Tottenham.
Over the period of the 12-week course Pete quit smoking and has seen a dramatic improvement in his health and quality of life.
Pete said: “I tried to quit so many times before but nothing had worked, so what Ida has done for me is amazing.
“I can smell again, taste again and breathe properly. It’s like being given a second chance at life and I can’t tell you how grateful I am.”
The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s health checks seek to predominantly engage men over the age of 35 who are reluctant to visit their GP, with a range of preventative, rehabilitation and health improvement initiatives.
