Ex-players always welcome at the Lane

Posted on 16 September 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Tottenham’s vice chairman David Buchler has dismissed newspaper claims that the club does not welcome its former players at White Hart Lane.
This article is set to run tomorrow despite absolute denials by Spurs, backed up by three of the club’s former international players.
Said David Buchler: “I learned today that one or two of the tabloid Sundays will possibly be running a completely false article detailing that the club is in someway badly treating its ex players.
“I have in my previous web site broadcast yesterday made it absolutely clear that not only are these players welcome but they are given complimentary seats, they are all invited into the Golden Cockerel Lounge and given refreshments including a buffet at half time and after the game.
“Despite my representations to the press to ensure fair play on a completely false article I am told that no changes will be made and that while the article might be one that the club might not like the sports editor concerned likes the story and is going with it.
“There is little more that the club can do other than report the true facts to the supporters in the way that we are trying do now. I hope you understand and continue to read true opinions by former players like those below which I believe sets the record straight.”
Cliff Jones: “I can only speak from a personal point of view but I’ve always felt very welcome. You only have to look around and see how many ex-players are employed on a matchday and during the week by the club, a job they all enjoy and are very pleased to do.
“I thought what the new owners did for Bill Nicholson said a lot. It was a great night for Bill that went down well with everyone connected with the club and showed that they recognised what he did for us. That showed they care for the club.”
Gary Mabbutt: “The new owners showed straight away their feelings for the club by arranging a pre-season game against Fiorentina for Bill Nicholson.
"That showed everyone they had their heart and soul in the club. They’ve brought in Glenn Hoddle and John Gorman, Colin Calderwood and Chris Hughton are all back with the first team. They seem to realise what supporters want from the club.”
Martin Chivers: “I’ve been here for 11 years and always felt completely welcome. Tottenham Hotspur is like a second home for me.
"The club always welcomes back former players with open arms. It even had a Legends Lounge where you would always see the likes of Tommy Harmer, Len Duquemin, John Pratt, Garry Brooke, Cliff Jones and, of course, Bill Nicholson.
“The club encourages old players to come back. They have even recently sent out a letter to ex-players welcoming them into the new Golden Cockerel Lounge. What more can they do?”
<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
