Every Spurs international goal this week in profile

Eric Dier’s crucial strike for England against Slovakia on Monday night took the total number of goals scored by Spurs players during this international break to seven.

And with the likes of Heung-Min Son, Ben Davies and new signings Serge Aurier and Davinson Sanchez among those set for action today (Tuesday 5 September), that number could still rise.

Here’s a look at each of our players’ international goals so far and what they meant for their respective nations…

Marcus Edwards

England Under-20s 3-0 Netherlands
Thursday 31 August

Young midfielder Marcus Edwards marked his first cap at Under-20 level for England with a fine opening goal to set his side on the way to a 3-0 friendly win over the Netherlands in Telford.

Brought down just outside the box, he dusted himself down to curl a marvellous left-footed free-kick into the top corner with 27 minutes gone. Marcus later missed a penalty, but his side had done more than enough to win the game by that stage.

Harry Kane

Malta 0-4 England
Friday 1 September

With England struggling to break down a packed Malta defence, Harry Kane profited from a Dele Alli assist to break the deadlock and set Gareth Southgate’s men on the way to an important victory, which kept them two points clear at the summit of Group F in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying.

Eight minutes after the break, Dele danced his way into the box before playing in Harry to finish from the left angle.

Malta 0-4 England
Friday 1 September

After a long-range strike from Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand doubled England’s lead, Harry set up Danny Welbeck to make it 3-0 before our striker doubled his personal tally to complete the Three Lions’ win in stoppage time.

Controlling a ball forward from ex-Spur Kyle Walker, Harry finished coolly from inside the box.

Denmark 4-0 Poland
Friday 1 September

Christian Eriksen inspired Denmark to a stunning 4-0 home win over highly-rated Poland to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive in Group E.

After supplying the assists as the hosts surged into a 3-0 lead, Christian capped his night off in style with a fantastic right-footed shot from 22 yards that found the top corner. The result kept the Danes in touch with Poland and Montenegro in the top two places, maintaining their hopes of reaching next summer’s finals in Russia.

Greece 1-2 Belgium
Sunday 3 September

Jan Vertonghen got forward from the back to break the deadlock for Belgium in Greece, kick-starting a 2-1 win that secured the Red Devils’ qualification for the World Cup in Russia.

With 70 minutes gone, Jan fired Belgium ahead and after a quick response from Zeca for the hosts, Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku bagged the winner with a glancing header to put Belgium in an unassailable eight-point lead at the top of Group H with two games to play.

Armenia 1-4 Denmark
Monday 4 September

Christian further boosted Denmark’s hopes of World Cup qualification with a trademark 25-yard free-kick in a 4-1 victory in Armenia.

His side recovered from conceding early on to equalise, before Christian made it 2-1 just before the half-hour mark. The result saw Denmark move above Montenegro on goal difference into second place in Group E, both teams just one point behind Poland with two matches remaining. The group winners automatically qualify for the World Cup finals, while the eight best group stage runners-up enter the play-offs.

England 2-1 Slovakia
Monday 4 September

Back in the England side after missing Friday’s win in Malta through suspension, Eric popped up with an important equaliser as England came from a goal down to beat Slovakia at Wembley and take a giant step towards reaching next summer’s World Cup.

Playing in a defensive midfield role, Eric darted to the near post to meet Marcus Rashford's low corner and turn the ball into the top corner on 37 minutes to cancel out a third-minute opener from Slovakia’s Stanislav Lobotka.

Rashford later sealed a 2-1 win that put England five points clear at the top of Group F with two games remaining.
