Jan's target

Jan Vertonghen is well aware of the need to turn around our home form in the Premier League.

“We owe our fans some points,” declared the central defender after helping us to a clean sheet and 1-0 win against Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League on Thursday.

While we’ve thrived on the road in the Premier League with victories against West Ham, Villa and Hull, draws at Sunderland and Arsenal and just one loss at City, we’ve suffered four losses at the Lane.

“We need to start winning our home games,” stated Jan. “We always play 100 per cent at home and sometimes we’ve been a bit unlucky but we want to put that right.”

To do so, we’ll have to overcome the challenge of improving Everton in a key encounter - the Toffees finished fifth last term and we’re currently level on points in ninth and 10th in the table - just two points adrift of United in fourth.

Everton were also in Europa League action on Thursday and a 2-0 win at Wolfsburg secured their place in the knockout stages.

“Everton are a very good team and I like watching them play,” said Jan. “The way they play is very interesting and hard to play against but hopefully we can beat them at home."

And Jan is likely to face two familiar faces in Belgian team-mates Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas, who scored the goals against Wolfsburg.

Jan gave this insight. “Lukaku is one of the best strikers in the Premier League, he’s very difficult to play against, especially with the way Everton play.

“He’s their star man but also Mirallas is back and he’s important for them too. Those two link up very well.

“I always look forward to playing against guys that I know so I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s not personal but they are good people and you always want to get the better of each other and hopefully that’s me on Sunday!”
