Ledley on Euro 2016 - 'lads will gain belief'

Ledley King played for England when they last met Iceland – and as the two nations prepare to face off in the first knockout stage of Euro 2016 tonight (Monday, June 27), our legendary former captain believes the five Spurs players in Roy Hodgson’s squad will take a lot from their involvement in the high-profile tournament.

Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kyle Walker, Eric Dier and Danny Rose have all featured prominently for the Three Lions in France so far and will be hopeful of playing a further part this evening in Nice with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Of course, Ledley knows all about representing his country at the European Championships, having played for the Three Lions in Portugal in 2004.

Coincidentally, one of his 21 senior international caps came in a 6-1 thrashing of Iceland in the immediate build-up to that campaign.

And, as he prepares to cheer on Hodgson’s charges tonight, the former centre-back has underlined just how beneficial it is for our quintet in the squad to have the opportunity to test themselves in such a top competition.

“Regardless of how the team performs, if you go out to a major tournament and do yourself justice you come back with new self-belief and confidence,” said the 35-year-old.

“You have proven you can perform at the highest level and it gives you a real boost going back to the Premier League.

“I know that back in 2004, even though I only played twice, the size of the challenge of who I was playing against and coming through it meant I certainly came back with a new air of confidence.

“With the England lads now, in fact with all 11 players we’ve had out there, this experience can only be good for the Club.”

Kick-off tonight is at 8pm UK time.
