The 1-0 defeat at the Riverside on Saturday means Middlesbrough are three points ahead of ourselves and Manchester City going into the final weekend of fixtures.
Boro need a point on the last day but by a quirk of the fixtures, they have to go to City on Sunday while we take on Blackburn Rovers at the Lane.
For us to claim seventh and a UEFA Cup spot we're looking at City to beat Boro by as few goals as possible while at the same time, we beat Rovers by two more goals - for example, if City win 1-0, we need to win at least 3-0.
"It can happen," stated Erik. "We're recharging our batteries now for the last game of the season and I believe we can do it.
"You never know what will happen in football, sometimes fate has something for you.
"It's not impossible. Maybe we need a little luck elsewhere but I've been around for a few years now and funny things can happen on the final day."
Reflecting on the 1-0 loss on Teeside, Erik sighed: ""Everyone was down about it, of course.
"We weren't happy with how we played, we conceded a bit of as silly goal when we lost the ball and they countered on us and it wasn't the best of games for us.
"The goal was deflected as well and I feel that sort of luck has gone against us a lot of times this season."
Erik Edman admitted the lads felt shattered after losing at Middlesbrough but insists we have to believe we can still make it into Europe.
