England joy, Teddy hits 50!

Posted on 15 June 2002  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Teddy Sheringham won his 50th cap as England stormed to a 3-0 victory over Denmark in Niigata to reach the last eight of the World Cup.

The outcome never looked in doubt from the 5th minute when a David Beckham corner eluded Sorensen and Rio Ferdinand nodded the ball back across goal where the Sunderland keeper fumbled it into his own net.

Michael Owen opened his World Cup goalscoring account on 22 minutes, before Emile Heskey did likewise a minute before the break.

Robbie Fowler replaced Owen - suffering from a slight groin strain - after half-time, while Kieron Dyer came on Paul Scholes shortly afterwards. Teddy replaced Heskey with about 20 minutes to go but, by this point, England were simply playing out time.

England now face Brazil or Belgium in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Earlier, Germany won through to the last eight when a late strike from Oliver Neuville settled a disappointing clash with Paraguay.

Christian Ziege was missing for the Germans through suspension, but should be back to face either Mexico or the USA in the quarters.
