Emmanuel’s story

Despite the result, it would have been a special night for one of Gillingham’s players on Wednesday given the role the Club and its Foundation has played in providing the life-changing opportunity that gave him a career in the game.

Emmanuel Osadebe played 90 minutes for the League One side in their 5-0 defeat at the Lane in the EFL Cup, a little over a year since graduating from the Foundation’s Education and Football Development Centre programme.

The 19-year-old midfielder is one of many young people classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) that the programme has helped onto Further Education courses, combined with high quality football coaching, at one of a number of local partner colleges.

Although the programme put Osadebe on the pathway through to a playing career in the professional game, football is used as the hook to engage participants into education with many participants going on to study sports-related courses at University.
