Erik Edman described our opening day win at Portsmouth as a big boost to the confidence of the team for the challenges ahead.
An Andy Griffin own goal in first half stoppage time provided the platform for an excellent second half display during which Jermain Defoe settled the contest with a fine second.
"It was definitely a great win, you have to kick off the season in a fantastic way and to win 2-0 here does that," reacted the Swede after the game.
"We had a great pre-season with the Peace Cup win, but it all comes down to the beginning of the season. Now we have won the first game and it boosts our self-confidence. Now we are looking forward to the Middlesbrough game.
"We knew they are a fighting team with some creative players and it was really important to get the first goal and put them under pressure. After that we could profit when they pushed forward.
"The goal before half-time was a real boost and then there was the really good finish from Jermain. He has done that a couple of times in pre-season and it is no surprise to us now."
