Throughout May and June of this year, the Playing for Success team at Spurs Learning Zone ran ‘transition workshops’ to prepare Year 6 pupils for the move to Secondary School.
The transition from Primary to Secondary school can be an exciting time for students and their parents. It is the next stage in an educational journey leading to new experiences and challenges - but can also be an intimidating prospect.
The children, from Lea Valley Primary School in Haringey, attended the Learning Zone once a week for three-hour workshops which aim to equip them with the necessary skills to meet the challenge of life at Secondary School.
The Year 6 students practiced using a diary, reading a timetable and improving personal organisation as well as playing games and quizzes and using computers to design logos and profiles of themselves. The activities were also designed to help them deal with some of the worry or uncertainty surrounding the move to Secondary School.
The pinnacle of the programme was in Week 5 when the Primary pupils got a chance to meet and interview students from a real Secondary School, Northumberland Park Community School. The Year 6 pupils asked questions and recorded and edited their interviews which were to discover ‘The truth about life at Secondary School’. NPCS was well represented by Year 7 students who were supportive of the younger pupils and were a credit to their school, speaking with great enthusiasm and pride and were a mine of information about Secondary School procedures.
All pupils on the course have improved their confidence and knowledge of Secondary School and the experiences and work they will face.
The Foundation works with Primary and Secondary schools across the boroughs of Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest and offer support in all areas of education and school provision. Preparing pupils on the transition and step up into Secondary School is important to ensure they are ready both mentally and academically.
