Our Under-18s are through to Sunday’s final stages of the Copa Amsterdam after a crucial victory over Anderlecht on Saturday.
Cameron Lancaster scored the decisive goal against the Belgians in what became a straight play-off for a semi-final spot in Group B.
Alex Inglethorpe’s side started the tournament in strong fashion on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Marseille in what was a fiercly contested encounter.
Jake Nicholson put in an outstanding performance in midfield but it was a goal from striker Lancaster that again separated the sides.
Things were made easier in the second half when Marseille were reduced to 10 men after N’Kaye’s tackle from behind on John Bostock.
Into Saturday’s action and we found ourselves up against Botafogo – a team who defeated us at Eurofoot last July.
And once again the Brazilians got the better of us, with strikes from Vitor Vitinho and Jairo giving them a 2-0 win that took them through to the semis.
So it was left to us and Anderlecht to battle it out for final spot in the last four, and after Lancaster’s early strike, we shut up shop to seal a clash with hosts Ajax for a place in the final.
Botafogo will battle it out with Slovakian side AS Trencin in the other semi-final at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam.
