Duo's United front

Posted on 6 March 2002  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Old Trafford will always hold a special place in Simon Davies and Matthew Etherington's hearts.

The pair made their full Premiership debuts against the already-crowned champions Manchester United back in May 2000, just four months after joining us from Peterborough United.

Their previous start had been a Third Division game against Rotherham at London Road - now they were in front of 67,000 against the best team in the country.

Matty recalled: "It was a massive game for us to make our debuts and to be up against those players is a day I'll never forget, certainly one to look back on."

It meant even more for Simon - he was a United fan as a boy.

"I was a United fan as a kid and all my family were as well," he said.

"First of all it was a massive shock when we found out that we were playing and we had about an hour and a half to prepare ourselves. It went quickly and I've only got great memories.

"I think they were trying to score 100 goals and they were looking to attack.

"They scored early and I though to myself it could be a nightmare and everyone would blame it on us! But we equalised and although they scored another two, I thought we played quite well."

Times have changed though. Two years on and the pair have moved on from being wide-eyed youngsters at Old Trafford to professionals desperate to do a job against United on Wednesday night.

Matty, back in the frame after a successful loan spell at Bradford City, agreed that playing at Old Trafford did wonders for their confidence at the time but they would now go there and try to play their own games.

He said: "We'd only been there for a couple of months and it did wonders for our confidence. That day gave us a huge lift and helped us prove to ourselves that we could play at that level.

"We've played against these players more now and you give them the respect they deserve because they are quality international players but you try and prove yourselves and impose yourselves on them."
