Michael Dawson led his country out and Tom Huddlestone almost scored as England Under-21s drew 1-1 against France at the Lane on Friday night.

The Spurs duo impressed as 'Daws' proudly wore the captain's armband for the first leg of the European Under-21 Championship play-off.

France, who impressed in the first half, took the lead via Anthony Le Tallec's goal two minutes into the second half.

Midfielder Tom, who got better and better as the game progressed, set up a golden chance for Darren Bent to equalise

Tom then connected well with a header from Darren Ambrose's corner with 10 minutes left only to see the effort cleared off the line.

Two minutes later and Ambrose handed Peter Taylor's men a lifeline when he slid home Dean Ashton's cross shot.

The first leg was played in front of 34,574 fans at the Lane - a record for an England Under-21 international.
